Terms of Service
Last updated: October 22, 2026
The short version
- Jist is for people 16 and over. Under 18, you need a parent’s or guardian’s permission.
- Your library, highlights and notes are yours. Articles, podcasts and videos belong to their publishers.
- AI summaries can be wrong. Check the original before you rely on one.
- Pro is billed by Apple or Google, and you cancel it there. Free trials need no payment method.
- Washington State law applies, and consumers keep the protections of the country they live in.
- In the US, disputes go to individual arbitration, not class actions, unless you opt out within 30 days.
This summary is for convenience. The full Terms below are what apply.
1. These Terms
These Terms of Service (“Terms”) are an agreement between you and Berkeley Labs LLC (“Berkeley Labs”, “we”, “us”, “our”), the company that makes Jist. They apply to the Jist apps for iOS and Android, the Jist web app at app.tryjist.com, and the related services we provide (together, “Jist”).
By creating an account or using Jist, you agree to these Terms and confirm that you have read our Privacy Policy. If you don’t agree, don’t use Jist.
2. Who can use Jist
You must be at least 16 years old to use Jist. If you are under 18, or under the age of majority where you live, you may use Jist only with the permission of a parent or legal guardian, who agrees to these Terms on your behalf.
You may not use Jist if U.S. law, including sanctions and export laws, or the law where you live prohibits it.
3. Your account
- Give us accurate information and keep your email address current. We use it for account emails, such as confirmations and password resets, and for important notices.
- Keep your password to yourself. You are responsible for everything that happens under your account. If you think someone else has used it, tell us right away at support@tryjist.com.
- An account is for one person. Don’t share, sell or transfer it, and don’t create accounts by automated means.
4. What Jist does
Jist follows the publications, newsletters, podcasts and YouTube channels you choose and organizes what they publish. It decides what to surface in Today and what to compress or filter, groups related coverage into Stories, writes summaries (“Jists”) and Briefs, and answers your questions with Ask. Jist is a reader and an organizer. It does not publish news of its own.
Jist can compress or filter items based on your rules and its own judgment. Filtered items stay available in Filtered, where you can restore them, but we don’t promise that Jist will surface every item a source publishes.
We keep improving Jist, so its features change. We may add, change or remove features at any time, including what the Free plan and Pro include. Features labeled beta or preview may be less reliable.
5. AI-generated content
Many Jist features use artificial intelligence (AI) to generate content and make decisions, including Jists, Story summaries and Key Takeaways, Briefs, Catch Me Up, Ask answers, automatic transcripts, topic labels, and the automated decisions about what to surface (together, “AI Output”). AI Output:
- is generated automatically and is not reviewed by a person before you see it;
- can be wrong, incomplete or out of date, and can misquote people or misattribute who said what, even when it cites a source;
- is not professional advice of any kind, including medical, legal, financial or investment advice; and
- does not represent the views of Berkeley Labs or of the publishers whose work it describes.
Check the original source before relying on AI Output for anything important. You are responsible for how you use it. Ask answers come only from content in your Jist, meaning the sources you follow, what you have saved or opened, and Stories you can see. They do not come from the wider web.
If a summary or transcript misrepresents its source, please tell us at support@tryjist.com. We use these reports to improve Jist.
6. Content from publishers and creators
Articles, newsletters, podcast episodes, videos, transcripts, images and other material from the sources you follow (“Third-Party Content”) belong to their owners. Jist retrieves Third-Party Content from feeds, web pages and services that publishers make available, and presents it so you can read, listen to or watch it in one place.
- Third-Party Content is for your personal, non-commercial use. Don’t copy, republish, sell or redistribute it except as its owner or the law allows.
- We don’t create, check or endorse Third-Party Content and aren’t responsible for it. It may be inaccurate, offensive or unsuitable, and you view it at your own risk.
- When a publisher puts content behind a paywall, Jist shows a preview and links to the original. You may not use Jist to get around a paywall. Content from your own private feeds is shown only to you.
- Podcast and video transcripts may come from the publisher or be generated automatically, and can contain errors.
- We may stop retrieving any source, or limit or remove any Third-Party Content, at any time, including at the request of its owner.
Publishers and creators can ask us to change or limit how Jist displays their work, as described on our For publishers page. Copyright complaints follow the process in section 13.
7. YouTube
Jist uses the YouTube API Services: it plays YouTube videos in YouTube’s embedded player, shows a video’s comments and a channel’s details, and, if you choose Connect YouTube, reads your YouTube subscriptions once so you can follow those channels. By using Jist, you agree to be bound by the YouTube Terms of Service. Our Privacy Policy explains what Google receives when you play a video, and what Connect YouTube reads and keeps.
8. Your content
“Your Content” means what you add to Jist: the sources you follow, lists you import (such as OPML files), your highlights, notes, collections, rules and settings, your Ask questions, and the share links you create.
- You own Your Content. You give us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to host, store, copy, process and display it only as needed to operate, secure, support and improve Jist, and to show the share pages you create. This license ends when you delete Your Content or your account, except for copies kept for the limited time described in our Privacy Policy.
- You are responsible for Your Content and for having the right to access the sources you add.
- Public sources are shared across Jist. When you follow one, Jist retrieves it once for everyone who follows it, and other people may see it recommended in Discover. Other people can’t see who follows a source.
- Private feeds stay yours. If you add a feed that is personal to you, such as a paid podcast or newsletter feed that contains your own access key, Jist keeps it private to your account: it is never recommended to anyone else, its items are visible only to you, they don’t join shared Stories, and sharing one of them never shares its Jist or its text (see Sharing). Jist recognizes most private links automatically, and you can mark any feed as private when you add it. Only add private feeds you are entitled to use, and follow the publisher’s terms for them.
9. Sharing
You can create links that share a Jist, a Story or an article. Anyone with a share link can open it without an account. A shared article includes the full text only where the publisher allows it. Otherwise it shows the Jist, a preview and a link to the original. A shared episode or video shows its Jist, chapters and notes, with YouTube’s player or the publisher’s own audio; its transcript appears in full only when the publisher wrote it, and otherwise only the moment you shared with a few lines around it. A Long Jist appears when one has been written. An item from one of your private feeds is never shared with its Jist or its text: sharing a post shows only its title, source, date and author and a link to read it on the publisher’s site (without your access key), and sharing an episode shares a link to the show. If the same post is also in a public source, sharing it shares that public version. If you have set a display name, the share page shows it.
Share pages ask search engines not to index them, but anyone you send a link to can pass it on. To turn off a share link, choose Stop sharing this link where you shared it, or contact us at support@tryjist.com. Deleting your account turns off all of your share links.
10. Plans, subscriptions and promotions
Free and Pro
Jist has a free plan (“Free”) and a paid subscription (“Pro”). What each includes, and any limits, are described in the app and may change. Moving from Pro to Free never deletes your library, highlights or notes, although Free limits apply to what you can see and do.
Buying Pro
Pro is sold as an auto-renewing subscription through the Apple App Store or Google Play (each a “Store”), using your Store account. The price, billing period and any taxes are shown before you buy, and the Store charges your payment method when you confirm the purchase. Your subscription renews automatically at the end of each billing period, at the then-current price, unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the period ends. You can manage or cancel it in your Store account settings. Cancelling stops future renewals, and you keep Pro until the end of the period you have paid for. Pro applies to your Jist account wherever you sign in, including the web app.
Price changes
If the price of Pro changes, the Store will tell you before the new price applies to you and, where its rules require, ask for your agreement.
Refunds
Store purchases are processed by the Store under its terms, and refund requests are handled under the Store’s refund policies. If you are a consumer in the EU, the EEA, the UK or Switzerland, the Store also handles any right of withdrawal you have under your local law. Consumers everywhere may have additional rights under the law where they live.
Free trials
We may offer a free trial of Pro. Unless the offer says otherwise, a trial needs no payment method and does not turn into a paid subscription by itself: when it ends, your account moves to Free and keeps your library. If a trial is offered through a Store with a payment method, the Store’s terms apply, and the subscription starts automatically when the trial ends unless you cancel at least 24 hours before it does. Trials are limited to one per person, and we decide who is eligible.
Reasonable use
Pro is for one person’s own reading. To keep Jist fast and affordable for everyone, we may limit automated or unusually heavy use of AI features, and we will tell you if a limit affects you.
Jist Day
From time to time we may offer Free accounts a Jist Day: 24 hours of Pro that you choose when to start, within the claim period shown in the app. Jist Days are promotional, have no cash value, cannot be transferred, and may be changed or discontinued at any time.
11. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- use Jist to break the law or to infringe or violate anyone’s rights;
- use Jist to get around a paywall, login, technical protection or a website’s terms of access;
- scrape, crawl or download Jist content or AI Output in bulk, or access Jist by automated means other than our apps;
- use Jist, its content or AI Output to train or improve AI models, or to build a competing product or dataset;
- sell, sublicense or commercially redistribute Jist, Third-Party Content or AI Output;
- reverse engineer, decompile or try to extract Jist’s source code, except where the law allows it despite this restriction;
- interfere with or overload Jist, probe or test its security without our permission, or access another person’s account or data; or
- misrepresent who you are, or use Jist to harass anyone.
If you find a security vulnerability, please report it to support@tryjist.com instead of exploiting it.
12. Our rights in Jist
Jist, including its software, its design, the text we write and the Jist name and logo, is owned by Berkeley Labs and protected by intellectual property laws. Subject to these Terms, we give you a personal, limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable and revocable license to use Jist for your own non-commercial purposes. We reserve all rights not expressly granted.
You may use AI Output for your own non-commercial purposes, such as quoting a Jist in a message or sharing it with a share link. AI Output may describe or quote Third-Party Content, which remains owned by its publishers.
If you send us feedback or ideas, we may use them without any obligation to you.
13. Copyright complaints
We respect copyright. If you believe material available through Jist infringes your copyright, send a notice to our designated agent at support@tryjist.com, with “Copyright” in the subject line. Your notice must include:
- your physical or electronic signature;
- identification of the copyrighted work you believe is infringed;
- identification of the material you believe is infringing, with enough detail for us to find it, such as a share link or the source and title as they appear in Jist;
- your name, mailing address, telephone number and email address;
- a statement that you have a good-faith belief that the use is not authorized by the copyright owner, its agent or the law; and
- a statement that the information in your notice is accurate and, under penalty of perjury, that you are the copyright owner or are authorized to act on the owner’s behalf.
If you believe material was removed by mistake or misidentification, you may send a counter-notice to the same address. It must include your physical or electronic signature; identification of the material and where it appeared before it was removed; a statement under penalty of perjury that you have a good-faith belief it was removed as a result of mistake or misidentification; and your name, address and telephone number, with a statement that you consent to the jurisdiction of the federal district court for the judicial district where your address is located (or, if your address is outside the United States, any judicial district in which Berkeley Labs may be found) and that you will accept service of process from the person who sent the original notice.
We may remove material or stop retrieving a source without a formal notice. In appropriate circumstances, we terminate the accounts of people who repeatedly infringe.
14. Reporting illegal content
If you believe something available through Jist is illegal, such as a public share page, email support@tryjist.com with “Illegal content” in the subject, or use the Report this page link on a share page. Please include where the content is (the share link, or the source and title as they appear in Jist), why you believe it is illegal, your name and email address, and a statement that you believe in good faith that your report is accurate and complete. Copyright complaints can also follow section 13.
A person reviews every report; we don’t use automated tools to decide them. We may remove or restrict the content and will tell you what we decided and how to seek redress. If we restrict something you created, such as a share link, we will tell you why and how to contest the decision, unless the law prevents it.
15. Ending your use of Jist
You can stop using Jist at any time and delete your account in the app or the web app, as described on our Delete your account page. Deleting your account does not cancel a Store subscription. Cancel it in your Store account settings.
We may suspend or end your access to Jist, or delete your account, if you break these Terms, if we must for legal reasons, or if we stop offering Jist. Where reasonable, we will tell you first. If we stop offering Jist altogether, we will try to give you at least 30 days’ notice.
Sections 5, 6, 8, 12 and 16 through 23 continue to apply after your use of Jist ends.
16. Disclaimers
Jist is provided “as is” and “as available”. To the fullest extent permitted by law, Berkeley Labs disclaims all warranties, express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, title and non-infringement. We don’t warrant that Jist, AI Output or Third-Party Content will be accurate, complete, current, available, secure or error-free, that Jist will surface every item from the sources you follow, or that any content will remain available. If you are a consumer, you may have statutory rights that these Terms cannot change.
17. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law:
- Berkeley Labs will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary or punitive damages, or for any loss of profits, revenue, data or goodwill, arising out of or relating to Jist or these Terms, or for any decision you make in reliance on AI Output or Third-Party Content; and
- Berkeley Labs’ total liability for all claims arising out of or relating to Jist or these Terms is limited to the greater of the amount you paid for Pro in the 12 months before the event giving rise to the claim, or US$100.
These limits apply to all theories of liability, even if we were told such damages were possible and even if a remedy fails of its essential purpose. Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits liability that cannot be excluded or limited by law, including liability for fraud, gross negligence or willful misconduct, or for death or personal injury caused by negligence.
18. Indemnity
To the extent permitted by law, you will defend and indemnify Berkeley Labs and its members, employees and agents against any third-party claims, losses, liabilities and costs, including reasonable legal fees, arising out of Your Content, your misuse of Jist, or your breach of these Terms.
19. Disputes and governing law
If you have a dispute with us, please email support@tryjist.com first and give us 30 days to try to resolve it informally.
These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Washington, USA, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules. If you live in the United States, disputes are resolved by individual arbitration as described in section 20. Any dispute that is not arbitrated, other than claims brought in small claims court, will be resolved exclusively in the state or federal courts located in Washington, and you and we consent to personal jurisdiction there. If the law where you live gives you the right to bring a claim in your local courts, nothing in this section takes that right away.
If you are a consumer living in the EU, the EEA, the UK or Switzerland, you also keep the protection of the mandatory laws of the country where you live, and you may bring a claim in the courts there. Nothing in these Terms limits our liability where your local law doesn’t allow it.
20. Arbitration for users in the United States
Please read this section carefully. It affects how disputes are resolved and includes a waiver of class actions and jury trials.
- Who it covers. This section applies if you live in the United States. It does not apply to consumers living in the EU, the EEA, the UK or Switzerland.
- Talk to us first. Before starting arbitration or a court case, the person with the dispute sends the other a written description of it and the relief wanted (you to support@tryjist.com, we to the email on your account), and we both try in good faith to resolve it for 60 days.
- Individual arbitration. If that doesn’t resolve it, any dispute arising out of or relating to Jist or these Terms will be decided by binding individual arbitration administered by the American Arbitration Association (AAA) under its Consumer Arbitration Rules, rather than in court. The Federal Arbitration Act governs this section. The arbitration will take place in the county where you live or by video, and for claims of US$10,000 or less you may choose to have it decided on written submissions. Fees are paid as the AAA’s rules provide. We won’t seek our legal fees or costs from you unless the arbitrator finds your claim frivolous or brought for an improper purpose.
- Exceptions. Either of us may bring an individual claim in small claims court if it qualifies, and either of us may ask a court to stop infringement of intellectual property or unauthorized access to Jist.
- No class actions or juries. You and we may bring claims only individually, not as a plaintiff or class member in any class, collective or representative proceeding. The arbitrator may not combine more than one person’s claims except as described in the next point. You and we each give up the right to a jury trial.
- Mass filings. If 25 or more similar claims are brought against us or by us with the help of the same or coordinated lawyers or organizations, they will be administered in batches of up to 100 claims, each batch decided by one arbitrator in one proceeding, under any AAA rules for mass or multiple filings that apply.
- Opting out. You can opt out of this section by emailing support@tryjist.com from the address on your account, with “Arbitration opt-out” in the subject, within 30 days of first accepting these Terms. Opting out doesn’t change anything else in these Terms.
- Changes. If we change this section, the change won’t apply to a dispute either of us already knew about, and you can reject the change by emailing us within 30 days of it, in which case the previous version keeps applying to you.
- If part of it fails. If the ban on class actions is found unenforceable for a claim, that claim will be decided in court under section 19 and not in arbitration, and this section still applies to everything else.
21. Apple and Google
If you downloaded Jist from the Apple App Store, you and we acknowledge that:
- these Terms are between you and Berkeley Labs only, not Apple, and Berkeley Labs, not Apple, is solely responsible for Jist and its content;
- your license to use the iOS app is limited to Apple-branded products that you own or control, as permitted by the Usage Rules in Apple’s Media Services Terms and Conditions;
- Apple has no obligation to provide any maintenance or support for Jist;
- if Jist fails to conform to any applicable warranty, you may notify Apple, and Apple will refund the purchase price, if any, for the app. To the maximum extent permitted by law, Apple has no other warranty obligation for Jist, and any other claims, losses, liabilities, damages, costs or expenses attributable to a failure to conform to a warranty are Berkeley Labs’ responsibility, to the extent these Terms do not disclaim them;
- Berkeley Labs, not Apple, is responsible for addressing any claims by you or a third party relating to Jist or your possession and use of it, including product liability claims, claims that Jist fails to conform to any applicable legal or regulatory requirement, and claims under consumer protection, privacy or similar laws;
- if a third party claims that Jist or your possession and use of it infringes that party’s intellectual property rights, Berkeley Labs, not Apple, is solely responsible for the investigation, defense, settlement and discharge of that claim;
- you represent that you are not located in a country that is subject to a U.S. Government embargo or that has been designated by the U.S. Government as a “terrorist supporting” country, and that you are not on any U.S. Government list of prohibited or restricted parties;
- you must comply with applicable third-party terms, such as your wireless data service agreement, when using Jist; and
- Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these Terms, and once you accept them, Apple will have the right, and will be deemed to have accepted the right, to enforce them against you as a third-party beneficiary.
Questions, complaints or claims about Jist should be sent to Berkeley Labs at support@tryjist.com.
If you downloaded Jist from Google Play, Google Play’s terms also apply to your download and purchases, and Google is not responsible for Jist.
22. Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. If a change is material, we will notify you in the app or by email at least 30 days before it takes effect, unless it must take effect sooner for legal or security reasons. The date at the top shows when these Terms last changed. If you keep using Jist after a change takes effect, you accept the updated Terms. If you don’t agree, stop using Jist and delete your account.
23. General
- These Terms and our Privacy Policy are the entire agreement between you and us about Jist, and replace any earlier agreements about it.
- If any provision is found unenforceable, the rest remain in effect, and that provision will be enforced to the maximum extent permitted.
- If we don’t enforce a provision, that doesn’t waive our right to enforce it later.
- You may not assign or transfer these Terms without our consent. We may assign them in connection with a merger, acquisition, reorganization or sale of assets, or by operation of law.
- We are not responsible for delays or failures caused by events beyond our reasonable control.
- We may send you notices by email to the address on your account or in the app, and you agree to receive agreements, notices and other communications from us electronically.
- Section headings are for convenience only, and “including” means “including without limitation”.
